The science lesson for this week

What is weather?

VOCABULARY

The Air Around You
How do you know there is air around you? You can’t see air. You can’t hold or taste the air. You know that air is all around because you can feel it. Every time the wind blows, you can feel air moving.
The air around Earth is the atmosphere. The atmosphere is important because it has oxygen. Oxygen is a gas that people need to live. The atmosphere also has gases that plants need to live.
Water vapor is in the atmosphere. Water vapor helps make clouds. Rain, snow, and other kinds of precipitation fall from clouds.

Weather Patterns
What is today’s weather like where you live? Is it sunny? Cloudy? Rainy? Weather both helps and harms people. For example, rain brings water for crops, but too much rain can cause floods that destroy homes.
Weather is what is happening in the atmosphere at a certain place and time. The weather in a place depends on where the place is. In the United States, places in the south are usually warmer than places in the north.

Gathering Weather Data
You can learn a lot about the weather by looking out a window. Sometimes, you may want to know facts about the weather that you can’t see. Weather instruments can help you gather weather data. For example, you can use a thermometer to find the temperature. Temperature is the measure of how hot or cold something is. Another weather instrument is an anemometer. An anemometer measures wind speed.

Predicting Weather
People use weather instruments to predict the weather. One instrument that is used to predict the weather is a weather satellite. A weather satellite in space may take pictures of clouds. The satellite sends the pictures to Earth. People use the pictures to see how clouds move. People also use the pictures to make weather maps.
Look at the weather map below. You can find maps like this in newspapers. You can also see weather maps on television news shows. Weather maps show information such as temperature and the chance of rain.
